Translated by Jose-Luis Orozco.
Illustrated by
Elisa Kleven.
Orozco's third book of bilingual songs is a fine companion to his previous two. The songs are organized by the months of the year and focus on familiar holidays as well as Latino cultural celebrations. Kleven's art incorporates the vibrant lines and color of the folk tradition and provides a lively complement to the action-filled songs. Musical scores accompany the lyrics in both English and Spanish. Ind.

When restaurateur Don Carlos, who always wants más (more), gathers too many snails for his menu, they take over the village. Alonzo, his little brother, recruits birds to eat the snails but is stuck with the pigs he recruits to scare off the birds. Like the story, the bold illustrations, featuring scenes of people and animals milling around adobe buildings, are vivacious and amusing.

Latinos at Work series.
This series book comprises three parts: descriptions of different jobs and short profiles of successful Latinos in the industry; chapter-length profiles of eight well-known Latinos in the business, including football coach Tom Flores; and relevant resources. What the book lacks in prose style it makes up for in enthusiasm. Scattered throughout are poorly reproduced, posed head shots and candid photos of the highlighted Latinos. Bib., ind.

Latinos in the Limelight series.
Three books in this series feature two baseball players originally from the Dominican Republic and Latino-American Gomez, a hockey player. Quotes from the athletes and their acquaintances abound with little in the way of citations, but the texts are lively enough for the sports fans who will be attracted. Some of the color photos look washed out. A chronology and list of accomplishments are included. Bib., ind. [Review covers these titles: Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez, Scott Gomez.]

This is an anthology of poems, stories, and reminiscences of Latino life in America. Some are in Spanish, others are in English, and some are in "Spanglish," a mixture of the two. The authors provide a broad overview of the diversity of Latino culture, from Puerto Rico to Cuba to the Dominican Republic to Mexico and much in between. Bib., glos.

These jubilant poems salute mothers and grandmothers. The offerings, penned by thirteen well-known and emerging Latino writers, are narrative and impressionistic, speckled with Spanish, and by turns romantic, nostalgic, sentimental, heartbreaking, and humorous in mood. The mixed-media illustrations are drenched with colors that capture each poem's temperament and setting.

Five Latino singers--Selena, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, and Enrique Iglesias--are profiled in readable, though overly adulatory, biographical chapters. Illustrated with standard-quality color photographs, the volume traces and celebrates the growing "Pop en Español" movement, which blends Latin rhythms and language with American popular music. Over a dozen Latino baseball players are introduced in a series of double-page spreads. Each biographical entry begins with a list of facts, including birth date, position played, and main teams, followed by a skimpy summary of the player's life and career. A color illustration of each player, designed to look like a hand-tinted baseball card, accompanies each profile.

Instead of using her new journal to record the seven stories her Latin American relatives tell her, Carmen Teresa is more intrigued with the motif of food that runs throughout the tales. She collects seventeen recipes, which are included in the last quarter of the book. Despite an unchanging narrative voice and a somewhat confusing structure, the book, illustrated with striking linocuts, offers a taste of Latin culture. Glos.

As Marisol hurries home to check on her pregnant cat, she's waylaid by a Spanish-speaking neighbor and several relatives, asking for translation help. Containing her impatience, she assists everyone. Luckily, she doesn't miss the kittens' arrival. Mamá thanks her warmly, using tentative English instead of relying on Spanish. The occasionally stiff illustrations offer a brightly colored view of Marisol's neighborhood.

Carlson explains that her story combines several Latino traditions surrounding this holiday. For their Three Kings' Day celebration, Anita and her brothers take part in a parade, go door to door looking for the baby Jesus, and leave out shoes for the Three Kings to fill with gifts. Plot and character development are less important than the enumeration of holiday customs, but the warm text and oil paintings give the book some depth.
